Couples Therapy:  Gottman Method

Are you and your spouse missing each other? Are your attempts to connect failing? You are not alone in your desire for a better marriage. I would enjoy working with you. We will collaborate to strengthen your relationship bond while gaining understanding of each individual needs.

While working with couples, my hope is to help you regain your connection. Most couples have perpetual problems, long standing things that no amount of communication is resolving. With the tools in this method I will help you learn ways to talk to each other about conflict and build connections.

Along with treating relationship distress, my specialties in couples work include recovering after an affair, healing from the effects of addiction, trauma and other emotional problems, preparing your marriage for success.

I offer sessions in person in my office in Yreka, California.

I am offering HIPAA compliant telementalhealth couples therapy during this highly stressful time for many couples. Surprisingly, it works quite well. You are able to receive therapy from the safety of your home during the pandemic. I encourage you to try it if your relationship is having difficulty.  I can provide this if you and your partner are in California or Oregon at the time of visit.

What to expect once you book a session:

Assessment is a big part of Gottman method.  When you book a session I will send you a relationship checkup for each of you to fill out separately, this is an important step for assessing your relationship and will help to guild the therapy.  This will cost $39 per couple, paid directly to the Gottman institute.  I will need an email address for each person to have the invite sent.

The first face to face session includes everyone in the couple, I will ask a serious of questions to get to know you as a couple and what brings you to therapy.

Then next sessions is each person separately for 60 minutes individually.  As a couples therapist I do not keep secrets, unless it is a safety concern.  This individual session helps to assess how your history is impacting your current relationship.

The third session is both people coming to session again, this is the final assessment stage.  I will give you feedback based on your assessment and give you each a copy of the combined scores.  We will work together to set goals for treatment.

The sessions after the assessment sessions are unique to each couple based on the assessment.

Gottman just started a new tool called relationship builder, also available with the assessment.  It is $149 per couple and allows you to explore tools on your own time between sessions.

Marathon: Private Couples Intensive Therapy

Created for couples who are motivated to improve their relationship, but don't want to spend 6+ months going to weekly appointments. These private couples intensive sessions, are customized to your needs and designed to condense 6-15+ months of counseling into just a few days while using cutting edge science, research, and approaches.

My private practice is in Siskiyou County California.

Using the research, John and Julie Gottman created, Gottman Method Couples Therapy that emphasizes a positive, “nuts and bolts” approach to improving your relationship.

With this method, you will learn specific tools to deepen friendship and intimacy in your relationship. To help you manage conflicts, I use various methods to help solve resolvable problems that are solvable, and to dialogue about “grid-locked,” unsolvable, “perpetual issues.”

We will also work together to help you appreciate your relationship’s strengths, and to gently navigate through its vulnerabilities.

Upon completion of the therapy, I will provide recommendations for you as a couple, and if necessary for each of you individually. I may recommend that Marathon Couples Therapy be followed by couples' therapy conducted in your home locale. In some cases, co-ordination between your therapist and myself and may be advisable.

When you book a session I will send you a relationship checkup for each of you to fill out separately, this is an important step for assessing your relationship and will help to guild the therapy.

To save us therapy time I will also have all consents  once you book your session.

I will need full names, phone numbers and email address for each part of the couple.  I will then send an invite to the Gottman assessment, as well as my confidential portal for scheduling, and setting up your information.

Assessment 4 hours

The research the Gottman’s have done over the past 40 years has shown that an assessment is a important part to find out what is going on for the relationship and what interventions can help, it guides the entire process.  The assessment starts with each couple completing the online assessment at home, this gives information regarding the sound relationship house and what areas need help.  As part of the assessment, I will then meet with the couple together for the first appointment.  Then each person individually for an hour.  I will then meet with the couple again together and we will establish the treatment plan and go over the feedback of the assessment.

About Me

I started working in the mental health field in 2005 after graduating with a BA from Union Institute and University in Brattleboro, VT.  I moved to the west coast in 2007,  I went back for my masters in mental health counseling in 2014.  I started working for local community mental health during my masters.  I did most of my internship at community mental health as well as working under a wonderful therapist in private practice.  I learned about the Gottman method during my internship and started to take the classes. I am now level 3 trained in Gottman, working towards certification.  I have had the opportunity to assist my clients as they explore their goals and resolve the barriers to their success and satisfaction in life. I enjoy helping people resolve relationship conflicts, overcome traumatic experiences, and tap into their inner strength.  As a licensed professional clinical counselor, I am an advocate for human rights. My mission is to fight racism, homophobia, transphobia and all other forms of hate.
